EastSide Charter School, Family Foundations Academy Announce Leadership Changes
Lamont Browne Accepts New Position in Colorado; Aaron Bass Hired to Succeed Browne as Executive Director
Wilmington, Del., May 12, 2016 – The Board of Directors of EastSide Charter School announced today the resignation of Dr. Lamont Browne, Executive Director effective July 1st. Dr. Browne and his family will be moving to Denver, Colorado, where he will work in an executive leadership role in a public school district in the Denver area. Browne remarked, “There are many high need kids all over our country, and I am excited to build upon all that I’ve learned here to have a positive impact on teachers and leaders in Denver. I couldn’t be more humbled by the opportunity I’ve had in Delaware, and the support and success of every member of my team over the last 5 years.”
EastSide also has the responsibility for managing Family Foundations Academy (FFA) and effective July 1st Aaron Bass will replace Browne as Executive Director of both schools. Bass brings extensive educational leadership experience, most recently as the founder and principal of KIPP DuBois Collegiate Academy in Philadelphia, PA. Bass successfully established and built Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale in 2004, which is part of a national organization that prepares middle school students for college by providing high school and college student experiences in the teaching profession. In 2007, Bass joined KIPP Philadelphia Charter School as the upper school dean and later founded and led the first KIPP high school in Philadelphia in 2010. KIPP is among the most respected and nationally recognized organizations of charter schools in America.
“The opportunity Lamont has in Colorado is an outstanding recognition of the work he has done building and growing the EastSide and Family Foundations Academy charter schools,” said Charles McDowell, chair of both boards of directors. “Lamont is going on to lead school district principals and leaders doing what he does best – evaluate and improve the impact of instruction and leadership to improve outcomes for children most in need. We are sorry to lose him from Delaware, at least for now, but we are proud of the opportunity he has before him.”
“Our schools have long looked to KIPP as a model for charter school excellence, and we are excited that Aaron has agreed to join our schools. His leadership and track record for excellence is known throughout the national charter network. He is a fantastic fit for where we are going with these two schools,” McDowell said.
EastSide Charter School (Pre-K – 8, founded in 1997) and Family Foundations Academy (K-8, founded in 2006) are free, public schools that collectively educate more than 1,300 students across three campuses in Wilmington and New Castle, Del. In January 2015, the schools formed a partnership to be overseen and supported by a Central Office. Both schools pride themselves on being community-based schools, valuing community partnerships, strong relationships with families, and a dedicated and hard-working staff to ensure academic success for all students.

A message from the FFA Lower and Middle School Principals:
May 12, 2016
We were happy to see you this year attending report card conferences, volunteering at the school, enjoying basketball games and other school-wide events. This year we have instituted a new brand, aligned curriculum and strong cultural program! The energy has been magnetic! The operations of the school will remain consistent and we are ready to build on the foundations that we have set this year. Enrollment is in full swing and the percentage of students returning is higher than ever before.
As school leaders with years of experience in nationally recognized high-performing charter schools, we are confident that our schools are set up for success. Year one at FFA is (almost) down and we are set to take student achievement to the next level. Our 4th graders are transitioning to middle school, our 8th graders are graduating and attending great high schools and all of our scholars are prepped and ready to have a great 2016-2017 school year! As the years go on, our story will continue to shine even brighter. Family Foundations Academy will continue to strive for excellence.
We are also very excited to share in the celebration of Dr. Browne's pending transition out of the Executive Director role of FFA and EastSide. Dr. Browne and his family recently made the difficult decision to move across the country to Denver, Colorado where he will serve as a district leader overseeing principals and leaders to improve schools and their communities just as he did here in Delaware. Aaron Bass has been hired by the Board as our new Executive Director. We are looking forward to working with Mr. Bass, who also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. Please see the attached press release for more information.
Looking ahead to next year, we eagerly anticipate the merging of our schools into one campus. Our teachers are geared up and ready to welcome in a new year with both new and returning students and families.
We thank you for your continuous partnership and unwavering commitment to FFA!
Dr. LaRetha Odomusu and Mrs. Rachel Valentin
