About the Teacher

Welcome to Mrs. Guretsky's classroom page.  I have lived in Newark, Delaware for 40 years.  I'm married and have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters(age 7 and 2).  My daughters and granddaughters enjoy getting together for tea parties when we can!  I was a teacher's aide for 15 years and then went back to college at the University of Delaware to complete my teaching degree.  I graduated in 2001.  You could call me a LATE, LATE BLOOMER!  Teaching young children is my passion and my job is to teach your child that they can do anything they put their minds to do.  I will convince them that they are geniuses!  This is my 4th year at Family Foundations Academy and I am always amazed at the wonderful Programs and exciting projects the children engage in during the year.

Class News

A Note from Mrs. Guretsky                                                                                                                       April 19, 2010

We had a difficult transition in coming back to procedures, classroom rules, hallway rules, specialist rules, and playground rules. RULES! RULES!  I hope by this week we all realize there are 8 more weeks of school left and many things to learn.  I know they realize they are getting smarter and I hope we can keep the momentum up. Remember we have a field trip coming up on April 30th to Coverdale Farms, all money and permission slip due on April 26th, NO EXCEPTIONS! This Friday is picture day without uniforms

Reading – Our main story for the week is called When I Am Old With You  by Angela Johnson. This is a heart warming story about a child and their grandfather. Some children may even notice that they do some of these things with their grandparents.  This story is a real favorite of mine bringing happy memories of things I shared with my grandmothers. The comprehension strategy this week is Monitor/Clarify. Please refer to the packet I gave you at the conferences to help your child with the strategies. The comprehension skill is Noting Details which helps students understand and enjoy the story more.

Phonics – This week our High Frequency Words are; though, talk, ever, ocean, open, else, around and dance.  We will focus on the letter ‘y’ being used as the vowels ‘e’ and ‘i’.  I will explain that ‘y’ at the end of a small word usually makes the sound ’i’.  Some examples of these words are fly, cry, try.  Next I will explain that ‘y’ at the end of a longer word usually makes the ‘e’ sound. Some examples of these words are happy, funny, candy. As you know these words are found in the Phonics Library books and the I Love to Read Books that come home.  Please read these stories at least 5 times each.  Also have them circle the words that have ‘y’ and the new high frequency words.  Don’t forget that The Phonics Library Books have more pages.  Please be aware of this and know that it will take longer to read them.

Writing  I will continue to send home grammar pages to practice.  We are working on the correct use of Is and Are.  We use ‘is; when talking about one person, animal or thing.  We use ‘are when talking about more than one.  Is and Are are used to tell about the present tense.  I hope you were able to start on  the writing prompt about saving our Earth.  It is not due until May 5 but it can be handed in sooner.

Math – We are starting a new chapter in Math about Measurement.  We will explore measuring with nonstandard tools such as paper clips,  cubes and standard tools, such as rulers, yardsticks.

Science – We have discussed plants and animals and how they are the same and different.  We drew a picture of a living thing and wrote what we thought it needed to survive.  We should be planting our seeds this week and hopefully see them grow.

Social Studies – We will complete our unit on Where We Live .  We will try to review and study Monday and Tuesday night and have the test on Wednesday.  We will do some Economics next.
