About the Teacher

Mr. Marin's Philosophy

My philosophy on student discipline is very straight forward and based on the belief that all my students can and will achieve their personal best.  I maintain high expectations; provide clear and consistent procedures and rules for classroom management, and treat all students with the respect that I expect from them in return.  Consequences for misbehavior are reasonable and consistent and students will be taught the replacement behavior that is appropriate in an educational setting and will benefit their educational success.  I am a compassionate, sincere and dedicated individual who my students will find very approachable and knowledgeable.  I am very flexible and able to work with all students and their parents and take pride in being a valuable resource for my students.

Class News

A Note from Mr. Marin                                                                                                May, 17,2010

Last week we were fortunate enough to see our freshwater animals, the snails and guppies and the woodland animals, the pill bug and millipede.  The children are very excited about all of this scientific observation going on.  They are also in a very social mood where talking is happening while teaching is being presented all the time!  If you would speak with them every night about why they are in school it would be greatly appreciated.

Reading – Our main story for the week is called Fireflies for Nathan by Shulamith Levey Oppenheim. This is about a boy who spends time with his grandparents.  They catch fireflies in a jar just like the boy’s father did when he was six.  The comprehension strategy this week is Summarize. Please refer to the packet I gave you at the conferences to help your child with the strategies. The comprehension skill is Sequence of Events. You should still use the skill Story Structure every time they read a story.  This includes the setting, (where and when), characters, problem, events (the characters try to solve the problem) and ending (the problem may or may not be solved).

Phonics – This week our High Frequency Words are; caught, above, minute, against, already, begin.  We will focus on r controlled Vowels again this week but it will be: ‘ar’ which says the sound /ar/ as in car.  Some examples are ‘or’ in shark, farm.  Some more examples are artist, smart, large, and many more! Practice, practice! Especially the sheet sent home today with the high frequency words and phonics words! As you know these words are found in the Phonics Library books and the I Love to Read Books that come home.  Please read these stories at least 5 times each.  Also have them circle the words that have ‘y’ and the new high frequency words.

Writing  WE did a descriptive writing on an animal picture they were given.  They also did a book report.  This week we will write on our Special friend for their final mark on writing.  It would be good to practice at home because I am not allowed to help them on this prompt. Make sure they have capitalization, punctuation, lots of details and I don’t mean “they are very nice.”  What makes the friend so very special.  They should have at least 8 to 10 sentences.  They MUST convince me why their friend is so special.

Math – We will have our Chapter18 test on Monday, they all seem a little weak on knowing 2 cups =1 pint and 2 pints = 1 quart which means 4 cups = 1 quart

Science – We will be journaling what we are seeing in our aquariums and terrariums. Hope you were able to transplant  the plants outside or grow them in a bigger pot.

Social Studies – We still will talk about economics especially where we are in the world today.  This is a very important time to talk about saving.  The school store will help them realize how to save for what you really want and what you really need.
